Anthony Goicolea
Septemberists
Anthony Goicolea, an American artist of Cuban origin, was born in 1971 and grew
up in Marietta, Georgia. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Goicolea invites viewers
into his fantastical photographic realms with images inspired by fairy tales, mythology,
adolescent rituals, and science fiction. Goicolea manipulates and enhances the objects
and imagery in his large-scale, lush, and evocative digital photographs, bringing
to life people, places, and scenes previously imagined, merging memories, dreams,
and desires with reality.
The current exhibition of Goicolea's photographs displayed in Proof are from the
artist's Septemberists series of 2006. Shot on location on a Massachusetts farm,
the series portrays a group of boys in a dream-like landscape reminiscent of an
old Southern plantation. The photographs chronicle the preparations and processes
associated with traditional ritualistic ceremonies. The costumes, which allude to
fashions ranging from the 18th century to the 1920s, were created by noted menswear
designer Thom Browne.
